This article analyzes how teaching this discipline can contribute to the formation of critical and conscious citizens, capable of confronting social injustices and acting to build a more just society. The methodology used was a literature review, with an emphasis on the works of Paulo Freire, Anthony Giddens, and Michael Apple, as well as other relevant thinkers in the sociology of education. The results indicate that sociology, by stimulating critical thinking and the analysis of power relations, strengthens active citizenship, social emancipation, and justice.
