Based on this reality, the present work seeks to investigate Scientific Literacy (SL) in Science and Biology classes and its consequences for the teaching-learning process, considering evidence presented in the literature and practice regarding students' difficulty in interpreting complex texts and terms in Natural Sciences, which prevents the formation of critical thinking and the application of knowledge in daily life, in addition to the lack of comprehension and use of scientific language, reinforcing the necessity of SL for the interpretation of life and citizen formation. The study's theme is SL and its importance in student formation, guided by the question: “What is the importance of Scientific Literacy in Science and Biology for the teaching and learning process in Brazilian basic education?”, with the general objective of reflecting on the relevance of SL in basic education (Science and Biology), seeking to understand the concept, analyze the mediating role of the teacher, propose pedagogical strategies, as well as identify the indicators that assess this condition. Adopting a qualitative approach, the work is basic in nature, using bibliographic and documentary research, drawing upon theorists such as Sasseron, Sena, and Lira and documents such as the BNCC (Brazilian National Common Curricular Base) and PISA.
