In this context, text genres are important teaching tools because they allow students to develop language and communication skills through real practices of language use. This study aims to analyze the contributions of using text genres for the teaching and learning process of Portuguese in schools. The research is characterized as a qualitative bibliographic review, based on authors who discuss text genres, including Bakhtin (2003), Marcuschi (2008), Elias and Koch, and Gil (2002). The literature shows that working with different genres helps develop reading, writing, listening, text production, and discourse interaction skills, as well as bringing language teaching closer to the social practices students experience.
