The study adopts a qualitative approach and bibliographic review, based on theoretical references and official documents such as the National Common Curricular Base, to identify learning difficulties, the importance of the theme for scientific literacy and appropriate pedagogical strategies. The results show that students have recurrent conceptual gaps, such as difficulty in understanding abstract concepts, deterministic view of heredity and disarticulation between contents, aggravated by the distance between the curriculum and regional issues related to agriculture, the health of traditional populations and the use of biotechnologies. The work shows that the teaching of Genetics is fundamental to form citizen s capable of critically participating in debates on ethics, environment and health, and points out that contextualized, active strategies linked to the student's previous knowledge make learning more meaningful.
